About Yellowstone National Park

  • Yellowstone is the first national park in the world, created by an act of Congress in 1872
  • Yellowstone covers 3468 square miles or over 2.2 million acres
  • The park is 5% water, 15% meadow and range, and 80% forest
  • There are more geysers and hot springs in Yellowstone than in the rest of the world combined: 10,000 thermal features and over 200 active geysers
  • There are approximately 59 species of mammals and 309 species of birds
  • Altitude varies from 5300' at the north entrance to 12,000' at Eagle Peak on the east boundary
